A constellation of achievement: India announces Padma Awards 2024

On the eve of Republic Day, the Indian government unveiled the prestigious Padma Awards for 2024, recognizing 132 exceptional individuals in various fields of public service. This year's list shimmers with diverse talents, ranging from renowned artists and scientists to unsung heroes who have contributed silently to society's betterment.


Among the awardees, five individuals have been conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the highest civilian honor in the category of exceptional and distinguished service. They include:

  • Vyjayantimala Bali: A multi-faceted icon, Vyjayantimala's legacy as a legendary actress, skilled Bharatanatyam dancer, and parliamentarian remains unmatched. Her captivating performances in films like "Madhumati" and "Nagin" etched her name in India's cinematic history, while her social activism earned her immense respect.
  • Chiranjeevi: Known as the "Megastar" of Telugu cinema, Chiranjeevi has enthralled audiences for over four decades with his electrifying performances and dedication to social causes. He redefined Telugu cinema with blockbuster classics like "Khaidi No. 1050" and "Indra," earning him a loyal fan base and the Padma Vibhushan for his exemplary contribution to Indian cinema.
  • M. Venkaiah Naidu: Former Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu served the nation with dedication and distinction throughout his career. His commitment to public service, coupled with his vast political experience, makes him a deserving recipient of the Padma Vibhushan.
  • Padma Subrahmanyam: A legendary classical dancer and Padma Bhushan awardee (2005), Padma Subrahmanyam dedicated her life to preserving and promoting Bharatanatyam. Her exceptional artistry and tireless efforts in establishing her dance academy solidified her place among the doyens of Indian classical dance, making her a fitting recipient of the Padma Vibhushan.
  • Bindeshwar Pathak (posthumous): Founder of Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, Bindeshwar Pathak revolutionized sanitation practices in India and championed the cause of sanitation workers. His dedication to improving sanitation facilities for the underprivileged earned him the Padma Bhushan in 2001, while his legacy continues to inspire through the posthumous conferment of the Padma Vibhushan.

Seventeen individuals have been granted the Padma Bhushan, recognizing their distinguished service of a high order. The list includes renowned actors like Mithun Chakraborty and Usha Uthup, pioneering scientist K. VijayRaghavan, and legendary Marathi theater actor and director Rajdutt.

With 110 individuals receiving the Padma Shri for distinguished service, this year's list highlights the contributions of a diverse range of individuals. From social workers and entrepreneurs to artists and sportspersons, each awardee has strived to make a positive impact on society.
