India Dominate Day 1 of Hyderabad Test, Bowling Out England for 246 and Ending at 119/1

The first day of the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and England in Hyderabad witnessed India showcasing their all-around game. After losing the toss and being put in to field, the Indian bowlers dismantled the English batting lineup, restricting them to just 246 runs. In reply, India ended the day on a confident note at 119/1, trailing by 127 runs but with the upper hand thanks to a solid opening partnership.

Indian Spinners Weave a Web of Wickets:

The Indian bowling attack, led by the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, proved too hot to handle for the English batsmen. Ashwin, playing in his 80th Test, picked up 3 wickets for 58 runs, including the prized scalp of Ben Stokes who top-scored for England with 70. Jadeja, known for his consistent wicket-taking abilities, chipped in with 3 wickets of his own for just 40 runs. Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah also got amongst the wickets, taking two each.

England's batting started brightly with openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett putting on 53 runs in the first 10 overs. However, the introduction of spin after lunch proved to be their undoing. The English batsmen struggled to negotiate the turning deliveries and wickets started tumbling in quick succession. From a promising 89/2, England collapsed to 246 all out, losing their last 8 wickets for just 157 runs.

Solid Start for India in Reply:

In reply, India's openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, provided a solid foundation for the chase. Rohit, the Indian captain, looked in good touch before being dismissed for 24 in the 11th over. However, Shubman Gill remained unfazed and continued to bat confidently. He partnered with young Yashasvi Jaiswal for the rest of the day, with the duo putting on an unbeaten 95-run stand. Jaiswal, playing in just his second Test, scored a fluent 76 off 70 balls, showcasing his immense talent and temperament.

Day 1 Highlights:

  • India's spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja shared 6 wickets amongst themselves, restricting England to 246 runs.
  • Ben Stokes top-scored for England with 70, but lack of support from other batsmen cost them dear.
  • Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a solid start for India's chase, ending the day at 119/1.
  • India trail by 127 runs but are well placed to take control of the match on Day 2.

Looking Ahead:

The first day of the Hyderabad Test belonged to India thanks to their disciplined bowling and solid batting start. With a strong batting lineup still to come, India are in a good position to take a vital lead in the series. However, England cannot be underestimated, and Day 2 promises to be another thrilling session of cricket.
